Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is a process, adopted by organisations, in ensuring that set standards regarding food are met. Quality standards maintain consistency and quality in products.
In January 2012, Woolworths was the first national supermarket to offer certified Meat Standards Australia (MSA) graded Australian beef to customers. This quality assurance measure ensures high quality beef is met through tenderness, flavour and juiciness. The MSA grading system was developed by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). MSA conducted research includes 550 000 consumer product tests on 78 500 cuts of meat, using eight cooking methods. The research has
resulted in information booklets located in Woolworths stores regarding the best cooking methods for preparing and cooking different cuts of beef. Twelve of Woolworths most popular cuts of beef have been certified as MSA Australian graded beef including Fillet Steak, Scotch Fillet Steak, Rib Steak – Bone in, Porterhouse Steak, Rump Steak, Blade Steak Boneless, Oyster Blade Steak, Fillet Roast, Scotch Fillet Roast, Standing Rib Roast, Rump Roast and Bolar Blade Roast. The MSA grading system also extended to lamb including Easy Carve Lamb Leg Roast, Lamb Valentine Steak,
Boneless Loin, Lamb French Cutlets and Lamb Rack Roast.
Woolworth has created their own range of products called “Woolworths Select”. These products are tested by a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) certified onsite laboratory. NATA is the “authority responsible for the accreditation of laboratories, inspection bodies, calibration services, producers of certified reference materials and proficiency testing scheme providers throughout
Australia”. This method of quality assurance aims to meet and exceed customer expectations on quality. In order to meet this standard, Woolworths Select products must pass a Woolworths Quality Assurance Audit, all ingredients approved by nutritionists, food technologists and the Australian and New Zealand regulations and standards, chemical and microbiological testing, no artificial colours and use of sustainable palm oil. If customers are not 100% satisfied with these products, Woolworths will refund customer’s money as part of the Money Back Guarantee program.
Total quality management (TQM) is a control method implemented into businesses to encourage employees about food quality. In 2010, Woolworths invested $63 million into learning and development initiatives. This includes fresh food training where workshops are established for 75 000 staff members. The training provides employees with extensive knowledge in order to produce better customer service.
